Xi’an – The True Historical Location in China

Updated: 5 days ago

For me, Xi’an was a strange trip. Alongside sudden downpours that almost flooded the city, I didn’t feel like there was loads to do here. Below I’ve included my itinerary but I’m only going to expand on the parts that felt worth visiting.

Day 1 –

  • Wild Goose Pagoda

  • Blue Frog (lunch)

  • Opposite the Pagoda

  • Muslim Quarter – Huajuexiang Pedestrian Street

  • Shuncheng South Road – Bar Area

  • Drum Tower and Bell Tower

Day 2 –

  • Great Mosque of Xi’an

  • Guangji Street food

  • Duchenghuang Temple

  • Tang Paradise

  • Feixuan Shopping Area (Food area)

  • Daxingshan Temple

Day 3 –

  • Terracotta Warriors

  • Qinfengyuan Cultural Street

  • Xi’an City Wall

Popular noodle dish in Xi’an -->

Muslim Quarter – This area is amazing for food and you should 100% eat here or at least try some snacks. I didn’t buy any things to take out with me but I did try different street foods here. Hot and Cold noodles are a go to, I also enjoyed the breakfast jiangbing from the area. Very tasty and you can watch the locals make it for you. Also relatively cheap!

A rainy day in Muslim Quarter

Drum Tower/Bell Tower – I chose to go inside the Bell Tower which cost 30RMB, I went on my first evening as the rain had slowed down by then. You can climb up inside the tower which is fun, also seeing the inside is unusual as it has many paintings hanging up. I had to wear a mask at all times, they were very strict about this.

Drum Tower at Night -->

Great Mosque of Xi’an – This was a 5 minute walk from my hotel which was located at Drum Tower. It is hidden away behind one of the Muslim Quarter side streets but for 10RMB you can easily spend an hour in here looking around and taking photos. I went quite early so it was just myself and one family in the whole Mosque.

Fun in the Mosque

Tang Paradise – This area is huge! You could stay the whole day, I heard there is a show in the evening but I spent the afternoon there only. Lots of history, fun photo areas and a little shopping part towards the middle. There’s also a statue area, but the whole park is in a loop so you won’t miss out on any part. Tickets for a day cost 80RMB.

Terracotta Warriors – Of course, the warriors are a viewpoint of Xi’an. Located about an hour outside of Xi’an city, a DiDi can take you directly for around 120RMB and this for me felt worth it, to save messing around. I went early, like 8am arrival but I don’t think I needed to. I had been told it would take too long to get inside but I had already bought my tickets online so it was really easy. There are 3 parts to the warriors and each section shows a different part of the uncovered story. You can still see where they are excavating and what lies broken beneath.

A Warrior Ice Cream – You can’t not try it!

Ancient City Wall – To finish off my Xi’an trip, I took an evening walk around a part of the city wall. The wall is huge and a bike ride is recommended to see the whole wall. I walked a quarter of the wall and watched the sunset before heading down to the entrance area for the cafe that sat there.

Hotel – I stayed in the IBIS Hotel beside Drum Tower, quite cheap and clean, also easy to walk to the subway/underground to get around.
